Our Journey Begins: Arriving in Oaxaca for an Environmental Adventure

Last Monday, our team began an incredible journey to Oaxaca, Mexico, to participate in an environmental internship program. 
The trip started very early in the morning; we traveled by bus for eight hours, passing through mountains, forests, and small towns. 
The landscapes were stunning, and we could already see how nature is preserved in this region.

We are staying at an eco-friendly hostel near the Sierra Norte mountains. The place is beautiful and surrounded by nature. 
There is no air conditioning, but the fresh mountain breeze keeps us comfortable. The hostel uses solar panels, collects rainwater, 
and has a composting system to reduce waste. It feels amazing to live in a place where sustainability is part of everyday life.

Everyone here is excited to start our activities, and the local community has been very welcoming. 
Tomorrow, we will meet our coordinators and learn more about the environmental program we’ll be working on.

Sunny Mornings and Rainy Afternoons: The Weather in Oaxaca

  The weather in Oaxaca has been incredible since we arrived. During the day, temperatures are warm, around 27°C,   and perfect for outdoor activities. In the mornings, it feels fresh and peaceful, which makes it easier to wake up early and start working  on environmental projects. However, afternoons are very different. Around 3:00 p.m., it usually starts raining heavily, which is normal during this season.  Luckily, our coordinators always prepare alternative indoor activities when it rains, so we can still work productively. At night, the temperature drops to about 16°C, and it feels refreshing after a long day under the sun.  We sleep very comfortably because the hostel is surrounded by forests, and we can hear crickets and birds singing. This changing weather teaches us to be prepared at all times. We always carry sunscreen, raincoats, and reusable water bottles  to stay hydrated. So far, the climate has been perfect for everything we’re doing here.

Making a Difference: Our First Five Volunteer Activities

  Our volunteer work so far has been exciting and rewarding. During these first few days, we have completed   five different activities: 1. Tree Planting: We planted over 50 native trees to help restore a deforested area. 2. River Cleanup: We collected plastic and trash from a nearby river to improve water quality. 3. Beach Protection: We joined a campaign to protect sea turtle nests and monitored baby turtles. 4. Recycling Workshops: We helped teach local families how to separate and recycle their waste. 5. Building Birdhouses: We built wooden shelters to protect birds from predators and rain. These activities are teaching us practical skills and helping us understand how small actions can make a big difference  for the planet. The teamwork has been amazing, and everyone is motivated to keep contributing to the environment.

Green Oaxaca: Protecting Nature for the Future

  The program we are participating in is called “Green Oaxaca: Protecting Nature for the Future.”   It is organized by a local environmental organization that works with volunteers to restore ecosystems and educate communities  about sustainability. The main goal of the program is to protect biodiversity and reduce the impact of pollution and deforestation in the region.  Our coordinators explained that Oaxaca has one of the richest ecosystems in Mexico, but many species are in danger due to human activities. We are learning about sustainable farming, waste management, and the importance of recycling.  One of the most interesting parts is how the program collaborates with local schools to teach children about caring for the environment. This program is not just about working outdoors; it’s also about raising awareness and becoming agents of change.  We feel proud to be part of this initiative and can’t wait to contribute even more in the upcoming days.
